Internship, Thursday January 31, 2013: Today I got to the YMCA before 9:00 AM. I spent the day checking the balances for the scholarship Y participants. The amount of scholarship is a percentage of the total bill. With the new month arriving, and the new billing cycle, some of the scholarship recipients owe 3 or more months dues. The Membership Director reviews the billing and restricts access to the YMCA facility for any person with an outstanding balance. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.
Time to today: 4 hours
Time this week: 16 hours

I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.

Time this week: 12 hours
YTD: 65 1/2 hours

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Internship Tuesday, January 29. 2013: I got to the YMCA in Wilkes Barre by 9:00 AM. I worked with the Camp Director. After accessing the data bank, I added some names for the "Father/Son" & "Father/Daughter" camping trips. I also had to make sure that all of the emergency contact information was correct and that the participants were linked as family connections. I spent my entire day doing that and still have a few more to input tomorrow,

I left at 1:00 PM.
Total time this week: 8 hours

Monday, January 28, 2013

Internship, Monday January 28, 2013: The weather was icy today, so when I got to the YMCA at 9:00 AM, my on-site coordinator was not there. I worked at the front desk, all day. Helping people access the facility, giving directions, and amswering what questions I could. I also handled some small sales. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM. Total this week: 4 hours.

Friday, January 25, 2013

Internship, Wednesday January 23, 2013: I got to the Wilkes Barre YMCA by 9:00 AM today. I started by working on a mailing list for an upcoming swim meet. Using an EXCEL program I checked addresses and combined those for participants in the same family. I then used a mail merge to print out labels. I had to make 200 copies of the flier. The envelopes had to be rubber stamped with the Y's address and labels had to be affixed with the recipients address.

The fliers were folded and placed in the envelopes for mailing. I left the YMCA at 1:30 PM today. Time today: 4 1/2 hours.

"Y" not run?
Internship, Friday January 25, 2013: Today I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM. The 1st thing that I did was to work with the Fitness Director for just over an hour. I then talked to the Camp Director about some things that need to be done next Monday. Then I went to the front desk which was a little understaffed today.

I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.

Total time/week: 20 1/2 hours

Total time for internship (YTD): 53 1/2 hours.

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Internship, Thursday January 24, 2013: Today I got the YMCA in Wilkes Barre by 9:00 AM. I started by adjusting the termination date for Wilkes University students on the computer. Once that was completed I affixed stamps to the swim meet notices that I worked on yesterday. I then worked a mail merge for new YMCA members that had signed up via the Internet.

Once that was done, I worked at the front desk. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM. Total time today: 4 hours.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Internship, Tuesday, January 22, 2013: I was at the YMCA today by 9:00 AM. When I got there I was working on verifying locker rentals with the member on the agreement. I also added and/or corrected any discrepancies. I inputted the information into the computer.

Once that was completed I terminated the Silver Sneakers memberships for inactive participants. The Silver Sneakers program is generally for older participants, and is often subsidized through insurance policies. In the case of the people I terminated today, they are not YMCA members but have valid IDs for Silver Sneakers. Without participating in that program the YMCA is no longer being compensated, but with the valid ID, the participants could still get access into the YMCA, basically using the facility without paying for it. By terminating the access cards, they can no longer gain access.  I left at 1:00 PM.

Monday, January 21, 2013

Internship, Monday, January 21, 2013: I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM this morning. I started by working with the Wellness Director for about 90 minutes. I learned how the bikes work for the Spinning Classes and how the various fitness machines work.

I then worked with the Membership Director, who is my on-site intern coordinator. I entered new members into the Wilkes Barre YMCA web page. I then worked at the front desk. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.

Friday, January 18, 2013

Internship, Friday Jan 18, 2013: I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM. I started by making some labels on a dandy little label maker. I also made some cover sheets for some binders using Microsoft Word.

When I finished with that task, I went back to inputting addresses and verifying them for the Aquatics Department.

When I was done with that I was shown how to make a YMCA identification/access card. I got my card which gives me access to that YMCA facility. Out of specific tasks for the day I went to front desk to work there until it was time to leave. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.

"Y"  not be fit?

Internship, Thursday 1/17/13: I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM this morning. I finished inputting the contacts for this summer's Camp Kresge which the Y runs.

After that I renewed the dates for the Wilkes students that are registered at the Y for this semester. That was a different page on the Y's website.

After that I worked with the Aquatics director. I updated the addresses on her EXCEL program.

I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM.

Wednesday, Internship: It snowed today, but I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM. I had some more information to input into the computer. I have a few yet to do do, and should finish up tomorrow. That information is all for Camp Kresge which the Willkes Barre YMCA.

There is a small stack of college students that are registered at the YMCA that I have to work on after the camp project. I am becoming better at working my way around the Wilkes Barre YMCA computer program. I left the YMCA at 1:00 PM

"Y" not be fit?

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Day 5 of Internship: I got to the YMCA by 9:00 AM this morning. I finished my paperwork that I had started last week. Now they can run my background checks. I had to give all of my addresses since 1975 to make sure that I had never been investigated for child abuse. I graduated high school in'75, had lived in a few states and have been in the military, stationed in a couple more states. Needless to say I had quite a few addresses. That should keep the powers that be, busy until my internship is over.

I then started updating some information about another group for another camp. I was doing about the same thing that I had been doing for the past few days, except today I was working with the camp director instead of the membership director. I am getting to know my way around the YMCA computer system a little better each day.

I left at 1:30 PM

Monday, January 14, 2013

Day 4: Today I did my 4th day of internship. I was there by 9:00 AM.  I finished matching the emergency contacts with the summer camp group. I entered all of the information into the computer. Now the needed information is available when it is needed.

I then went to the front desk to work with those employees. I learned how to register new YMCA members and renewed members that go to Wilkes University. The university use the Wilkes Barre YMCA as their "Rec Center." The Wilkes students can access all of the Y facilities with their college IDs, but they do have to register for their ID cards to be approved. I left at 1:00 PM.

Make it a good day for You.

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

Internship, Day 3: I was at the YMCA by 9:00 AM. Kim, my on-site supervisor, had me checking the summer camp participants for emergency contacts. I'm not thinking it is because of my top-notch typing skills. I am getting through them and they need to get done.

I got through about 1/2 of the participants, so I imagine I'll be doing that again tomorrow.

The flu this year is particularly nasty and I am a bit under the weather. I'm not quite 100%. I hope that my going to the YMCA to spread my germs is not going to adversely effect my grade. I left today at 1:00 PM.

"Y" not try?

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Internship, Day 2: Today was my 2nd Internship day. I was there by 9:00 AM. I started out by doing a little Data Entry stuff for kids that are starting to register for summer camps. That took a couple of hours. After that I posted some signage pertaining to securing personal items. From time to time, things disappear from the lockers or when left laying around.

I then did some "shadowing" behind the front desk. The workers there showed me what they do in a normal day. Some registering, some phone answering, giving details about program or directions around the YMCA. They also have the task of selling YMCA tee shirts and accessories. All in all, they stay pretty busy. I left at 1:30 PM

Y be fit? "Y" and be fit !!!

Monday, January 7, 2013

Day 1: Today was the first day of my YMCA internship. I was there by 9 AM. The first task that I had to do was to fill out a small mound of paperwork created for employees and volunteers. After that, which took about an hour, I watched a video link on the computer which explained the history and mission of the YMCA. Various YMCA locations around the world were also highlighted. I received a small certificate for completing the online work.

I filled out paper work to be a YMCA member, The membership is compensation for "volunteering" to work at the YMCA.

With all of the paperwork completed, I was given a full tour of the Wilkes Barre YMCA. There are three floors to the facility with two gyms and a pool. I was shown the daycare area, the free weight area and the various workout areas.

I left the YMCA at 1PM.

Fit today, Fun Tomorrow

Internship: Tomorrow I start my internship at the Wilkes Barre YMCA. During the next 15 weeks or so I hope to gain valuable experience in the areas of Customer Service, Program Development and Coordination, Fitness Evaluation and Finance. The actual sponsor for this internship is the Membership Director, but while I am there I will have the opportunity to work with the various departments. During this internship I will be explaining what I am doing there for the world and any future employers to see.
